Calf Roping

In this event at Heavenly Acres contestants compete to see who can lasso a calf and tie it up in the least amount of time. As the calves are released into the arena, the contestant, on horseback, catches the calf as quickly as he can. This event is copied from the round-up duties of cowboys on ranches since the late 1800’s.

Ropes are usually 34-35 feet long and made from hemp. This is flexible yet strong enough to use. Break your rope in by letting it hang outside on a fence or get a little dirt on it. You can waterproof the lariat with petroleum jelly. Usually a 3/8 inch rope is good to start for a beginner because it is lighter and easier to use.
